Overcoming the Fear of Doing an Interview
If you’re using Jobs to be Done, you’ll face anxiety about doing an interview at some point: What if there just isn’t anything to talk about?
If you’re having a hard time overcoming that challenge, this interview will help you.
When I first had the idea to do an interview about subscription services I was excited. I know some of you are working in the space and I was eager to see what we could all learn from an interview.
When I saw the responses to my screener come back, all of the great candidates were women who had started subscriptions with clothing services. My immediate reaction was anxiety about being able to pull off a good interview. Women’s fashion isn’t exactly my sweet spot!
What if I don’t know what questions to ask?
This woman is going to feel so uncomfortable with a random guy asking probing questions about her clothes.
How in the world could this go smoothly??
Then I took a deep breath and did what I’ve done a thousand times before: I sent the invitation.
The next day I started the call, explained what I was looking for, and asked a few basic questions.
You’ll see that within two minutes of me ending my intro spiel, Melody is sharing all sorts of great details about school starting and moving across a state, and is surfacing all kinds of areas to for me to dig into. The anxiety is gone, we’re off to the races and on our way to a great interview.
If you’re facing this challenge, use the interview to motivate you. Schedule the call, setup the conversation using the intro that I always use, and dive in with a few simple questions about when they made the purchase. With almost every attempt you’re going to get great insights out of it.
